The boat tour of the Medicean canals takes about 45 minute is an opportunity to discover Livorno from an unusual and suggestive perspective. Passing through the waterways you will discover the original city with its fortresses, palaces, churches, bridges and cellars opening on the water, evidence of an ancient commercial and port tradition.
Republic Square: Fascinating passage under the largest Square-bridge in Europe, because it’s large 242 meters. It was built in 1838 during the Lorena Family in fact it’s known as the Grand Dukes’ Square for the statues of Ferdinand III and his son Leopold II upstairs. It’s also called the Voltone for the big vault that covers the canal and that puts in connection the old part of the town with the modern one.
Venice Quarter: Located in the historical heart of Leghorn, is the most charming quarter in the city. It was conceived at the beginning of the 17th century thanks to the Medici’s Family who called Venetian men to build this quarter through a system of piles. This is the main reason for which we call it the Venice Quarter besides the bridges and the canals putting in connection the different parts of the quarter and that make it similar to the Venetian city. In the 18th century it was the residence of the wealthy foreign merchants. Actually it’s a very lively area for the presence of characteristic locals.
